What is the WINGS Program?

WINGS is an MAISD and Muskegon Community College (MCC) co-sponsored program that provides in-depth summer study experiences for students in grades 1 – 6 who show exceptional interest and/or talent in focused subjects.  Classes are designed for passionate learners, curious minds, and “outside-of-the-box” thinkers.  All classes are held at Muskegon Community College's Stevenson Center for Higher Education.

Who are WINGS Teachers?

Teachers selected as instructors for the WINGS program demonstrate a passion for their area of focus and enjoy working with students of above-average ability.  They facilitate classes that stimulate thinking and creativity and provide educationally challenging opportunities for students.  Classes incorporate one or more core academic discipline.

Who are WINGS Students?

Originally developed to meet the needs of gifted and talented students, WINGS is an exciting program designed for youngsters who need more diverse intellectual and creative challenges.  The classes offered are intended as enrichment for all students with above-average abilities.  Students are recommended for the program by their teachers and principals on the basis of achievement in the subject, creativity, and self-direction.

What is the Cost?

Classes are offered on a tuition basis of $50 per class.  Four sessions are offered during the two weeks of classes in July, allowing students to take up to four classes.

What Kinds of Classes Are Offered?

Students can fly a little higher with such offerings as:  Readers Theatre, Let's Make Sense of Your Senses, Perfecting Poetry, Mind-Blowing Measurements, Math Madness, Relaxing Garden Art, Super Scientists, and LEGO© Robotics.  Students choose classes in which they are interested so they are highly motivated.  In addition, they are introduced to students from other school districts who share the same interests.

WINGS has proven successful by the high rate of student retention, repeat attendance, and outstanding positive results from evaluations.  Since the initial Summer 1980 WINGS Program, over 7,000 students have attended over 900 courses.  Most classes have been held on the campus of Muskegon Community College.
